If you’re in town a little early, on the evening of September 11 you’ll be able to see New York’s annual Tribute in Light. Two beams of light rise into the sky where the Twin Towers once stood, and you can see it from different parts of the city, including spots along the Brooklyn waterfront. It’s one of those things that always stops you for a second.

For anyone interested in the US Open, there’s also an “Open for All” Community Day on Thursday, September 10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens. It’s free to attend, you can walk the grounds, watch matches on the outer courts, grab food, and just take in the atmosphere without needing tickets to the main stadium.

If you’d rather stay closer to the venue, Crown Heights and Prospect Heights have plenty to offer. The Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are right next to each other on Eastern Parkway, both an easy trip from the venue. Prospect Park is just beyond that if you want a long walk or a lazy afternoon on the grass. And if you want dinner or drinks, Franklin Avenue and Washington Avenue are lined with spots worth wandering into.
